We have all been there... Our little ones start running a fever and we run to the medicine cabinet. As a society, we have been taught that fevers are bad. We don't want our little ones to have fevers because that clearly means that something is wrong. What if the fever was meant to do something though? What if suppressing it actually did more harm than good? As a mother of four children and an herbalist, one of the hardest things I ever encountered was a fever of 103. I kept telling myself, it is alright. I won't let it get any higher. Instead of running to grab the nearest fever reducer I possibly could (which trust me was tempting because I was panicked), instead I grabbed the only things I knew would effectively help which was Catnip and Spearmint. Quickly, I started brewing a tea and took my middle child to a tub filled with warm water and Apple Cider Vinegar. By the time she was done, the tea was ready… I immediately started giving her the tea. Not only did her fever start going down, she started sweating and within 24 hours...everything was gone.
A fever is a not a bad thing. A fever is a sign that the body is trying to fight off an infection in the body. If we immediately suppress that fever, our bodies are not able to do their jobs so the recovery time from whatever is actually causing the fever becomes twice as long. Now, I wouldn't ever let a fever get higher than 104 in my house. However, I have found that herbal remedies not only work to reduce a higher fever, but they also nourish the body and give it the tools it needs to fight whatever is going on! This is probably one of my ABSOLUTE favorite combinations that I have come up with. This particular blend consists of Catnip, Spearmint, and Lemon Balm.
